Sometimes we are very aware of the things that are unhealthy for us.  Cigarettes and excessive alcohol consumption might top the list, but what would you think if someone said that sugar was bad for you?  A doctor in California claims that, not only is it unhealthy, it’s downright toxic.

Dr. Robert Lustig from the University of California was on the Sunday edition of '60 Minutes' and said that sugar doesn’t just make us fat, it leads to Type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.

A recent study indicated excess consumption of regular sugar — can boost risk factors for heart disease by increasing a type of cholesterol that can clog arteries. There is even some scientific work that indicates sugar could aid the growth of cancer tumors by stimulating the production of the hormone insulin.
