If you are a "couch potato" then pay attention. The lack of physical exercise could cost you more than a few additional pounds, it could cost you your health. There is a new study by British researchers which gives couch potatoes something to be concerned about: kidney disease.

The research project tested 5,560 Britons and found a direct link between the number of hours spent sitting and kidney problems. These statistics included taking into effect  even  smoking, age, gender, ethnicity, body-mass index, blood pressure, medications and exercise.

Women who only sat for short periods of time had about a 30 percent lower chance of kidney disease than those who sat more, and men who spent more time on their feet experienced a 20 percent reduction in risk compared to the couch potato type.

Sitting too much already is known to be linked to other diseases such as type II diabetes.
