Lapeer Days Festival Begins This Week
The annual Lapeer Days Festival begins this week, August 17, 18 & 19th in downtown Lapeer. The Skerbeck Bros. carnival starts on the 15th (Wednesday) and continues through the weekend.

The 10th annual CrimFit Kids Invitational races will take place on Saturday, August 18th at Flushing County Park, 4417 North McKinley Road. There is a One Mile Competitive Run, plus 1/2 and 1/4 mile fun runs.
The annual Bauman's Charity Race 5k run & walk, 1-mile fun run and Super Hero 1/2K Dash will take place on Thursday, August 16th at Flint's Kettering University. The kids races will start first at 6:45, then the 5k will start at 7 pm.
The Genesee County Fair begins August 13th (Monday) and ends August 19th (Sunday) at the Genesee County Fairgrounds on Mt. Morris Road. All sorts of entertainment awaits you with plenty to see and do every day of the fair.
August 11th is "National Garage Sale Day," a day to turn the whole country into one giant shopping mall. Or flea market. If you've been accumulating a lot of "stuff" that is still usable but you haven't used it in a while, you might as well sell it and make a couple of bucks.
Many Olympic athletes and professional athletes have taken part in the Canusa Games, held each summer between the cities of Flint and Hamilton, Ontario. This year's games are happening in Flint, the 55th anniversary of the friendly competition.
It looks as though the weather may put a damper on our enjoyment of the annual Perseid Meteor Showers, which take place August 9-13. The most meteor activity should come on the 10th through the 12th, with as many as 100 per hour.
The Flint School of Performing Arts invites one and all to their open house on Tuesday, August 14th from 6-8 pm at the Flint Institute of Music on East Kearsley Street in Flint's Cultural Center.
The second Friday of every month is Artwalk in downtown Flint. The festivities take place from 6-9 pm at several downtown venues. I like to start at the Greater Flint Arts Council headquarters on Saginaw (next to Halo Burger) to grab a map of participating locations.
Bring your appetite to the Taste in Fenton on Saturday, August 11th from noon to 8 pm at the Fenton Community and Cultural Center at 150 S. Leroy Street. There will be plenty to tantalize your taste buds.
It seems lately that there has been a number of small children perilously dangling from great heights, but it’s also a good thing that there have been a number of heroes on hand to save them. A four-year-old girl became stuck in the rails of a second story balcony in China, and hung there precariously until emergency services arrived.
