The City of Flint is asking residents for help in testing the water in their homes in an attempt to get a more accurate measure of lead and copper in the water. The city began using Flint River water as its primary water source in April.
As the City of Flint gets ready to make the switch to Flint River water for drinking water, the timing couldn't be more perfect for this year's annual river cleanup.
The search is on to find volunteers to help comb garbage and debris out of the Flint River and its banks. The 15th Annual Flint River and Community Clean Up is this Saturday (April 28th) from 9am till noon.
Genesee County will pay the city of Flint approximately $1 million a year to use Flint River water as a backup water source. The county needs to have a backup source of water in case of emergency, such as a major pipeline break, power outage or contamination. The water would be treated, just like the water that the city currently gets from Detroit.
