Graduation night was supposed to be a special night. But it was anything but, for high school senior Julian Nanez and his family. The autistic teen was not allowed to participate in the commencement ceremony with his classmates. What's worse, is the Arlington, Texas teen and his family were not made aware of the school's decision until just hours before the event.

This is especially troubling to me after spending the weekend in Illinois honoring a dear young man as he completed high school. My friend's son Clifford, a special-needs student who has had a profound impact on his classmates, received a standing ovation and uproarious applause as he walked across the stage at commencement. (Click here to meet this special young man, and learn about the rare, terminal disease which has robbed him of an average life.)

On the other hand, Julian's story is appalling. Why would a school deny this young man the opportunity he's earned? Why didn't his fellow students protest?
