There once was a time when nearly every store in Michigan was open on Thanksgiving Day. Well, it seems those days are over... and rightfully so.

For many years, families would sit down for Thanksgiving dinner, and there would always be at least one member absent because they had to work. It felt like some companies just didn't care that Thanksgiving was meant for families to be together for at least one day; they seemed more focused on the almighty dollar.

Since the pandemic, more and more companies are getting on board by closing for Thanksgiving. It’s nice to see businesses recognizing that this holiday is all about family time. Now, employees can actually enjoy the day with their loved ones instead of rushing off to work, which is what it should be all about.

Now, of course, there are still some people who have to work during the holidays, and some even rely on those shifts to make ends meet. But it's nice to see more companies giving folks the option to be home with family if they can. Hopefully, we’ll keep moving in that direction so everyone gets a chance to enjoy the holiday when they need it most.

I totally get it—some people have a tradition of hitting the stores right after Thanksgiving dinner to kick off their holiday shopping. But I’m here to tell you, you don’t have many options left. If you’re that committed, your best bet is to grab your phone, snag some leftovers, and let your gravy-covered fingers do the shopping online.
