Even with just 8 locations in Michigan, this iconic gas station is changing its name—and fans aren’t happy about it.

Some customers weren’t happy when they found out earlier this year that the popular Kum & Go gas station/convenience store chain would be changing its funny yet controversial name. When the announcement was first made back in January, the new name was revealed, but the timeline for the rebranding remained uncertain. Now, we know the rebranding will go into effect in 2025.

Kum & Go is relatively new to Michigan, but the company has been going strong since its founding in 1959. At the time, it was called Hampton Oil Co.

Why Would Kum & Go Change Its Name After So Many Years?

Honestly, I don’t think the reason why will come as a big surprise. According to The Drive, Kum & Go was acquired by FJ Management’s Maverik chain in April 2023. Apparently, the new owners are worried that Kum & Go’s name could hurt its business prospects. Do they not realize how many people stop in to buy a lighter or a shirt literally because of the name? What Is Kum & Go Changing Its Name To?

At some point in 2025, Kum & Go will change its name to Maverik. I know, it’s not nearly as fun as Kum & Go.

When founder Bill Krause and his father-in-law T.S. Gentle came up with the name in the 70s, humor was not their intention. The "K" stood for Krause and the "G" stood for Gentle.
