In 1986, the Horticultural Society asked Frederik Meijer if he would donate a chunk of his land for their purposes. Frederik had already earmarked this land to build a brand new Meijer super store. When explained that the land was perfect for a public garden, complete with wetland and a brook, Meijer reconsidered and found a new location to build his super store.

The 70+ acre land was acquired in January 1991 and by 1993 was named the ‘Michigan Botanical Garden’.

With the additions of sculptures and trails over the next few years, the park was re-named the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park in 2002.

Frederik’s wife Lena had her influential touch put upon the park; the tropical conservatory, child’s garden, and even a copy of the farm where she lived and was raised in the town of Amble – considered now to be a semi-ghost town in Montcalm County.

A couple of years after the park’s first incarnation, Meijer Gardens opened to the public on April 20, 1995. Twenty eight years later, the 14 millionth customer paid a visit.

In 2023, Meijer Gardens welcomed their 14 millionth visitor.
