This totally rustic and historic log structure sits alone back in the woods along the Huron River in Baraga County. This log cabin lodge was built in the 1910s on 520 acres of land that sits on a cliff/hill overlooking the river.

Ward Road is a dirt road that turns into a one-lane trail that takes you deeper back in the woods where this cabin sits.

The cabin is known as the Huron Bay Lodge (or Huron River Lodge) built by Michigan’s then-Lieutenant Governor. He and his guests would always hole up in this secluded getaway when they traveled into the Upper Peninsula. This was over 100 years ago, and there was no way they could make the drive thru the muddy land. They had to hire guides and drivers to get them to this ‘lodge’ – once there, they would stay for a couple of weeks and hunt, fish, drink, eat, and tell stories.

For decades this place was neglected – even so, the logs have held up, but the foundations have degraded over time. This is wilderness country – it abounds with amphibians, bald eagles, bears, beavers, coyotes, deer, fox, osprey, otters, reptiles, ruffled grouse, snowshoe hares, songbirds, squirrels, wild turkeys, and woodpeckers. Possibly an occasional wolf, moose…..or even a cougar.

But remember – upon visiting, respect any ‘no trespassing’ signs that may be posted. If so, seek the proper permission to explore. Take a look at the photo gallery below…what a place!
