Apparently, this is all the rage in Mexico. Having a bedazzled beetle crawling all over you seems a little creepy to me, but I have to admit that I am not a big consumer of jewelry. Maquech brooches, which consist of live beetles with colorful, sparkly gems glued to their backs are big sellers south of the border.

The creepy, crawly jewels come with a glued on gold chain to keep your "bug bling" from wandering off. Maquech brooches, are reportedly an update of an old Mayan tradition. Weren't the Mayans the ones predicting the end of the world in 2012?

If you succumb to this buggy temptation while on Spring Break in one of Mexico's many resort areas, be forewarned that it is illegal to import them into the United States.

Maybe I can strike it rich by decorating some of my Box Elder bugs and selling them on the corner.
