There's some history behind this event.  It goes back to the early 1800's in Finland where a local brigand called Rosvo-Ronkainen would only take troops that proved themselves worthy on a challenging track.  In those days, it was common practice to steal women when raiding villages, so it was imperative that his men could "grab and go."

These days, the women participate willingly in the Wife-Carrying race, the world championship taking place this weekend in Finland.

The sport is catching on in other places, and will be featured in the World Alternative Games in the U.K. this August.  I like the prize offered at the W.A.G. for Wife-Carrying.  The winner gets his partner's weight in beer.
