Authorities are warning residents about an IRS phone scam that is currently hitting Mid-Michigan. People are reporting that they are getting calls from someone from the Internal Revenue Service claiming that they owe money, most likely from back taxes. Then the alleged IRS agent will tell victims that they can cut you a deal, but only if you make a prompt payment.

If you do owe taxes to the IRS, however, they will send you a written notification.  The IRS will never ask for credit or debit card information over the phone. This scam, like many others, primarily targets elderly people who still use land-line phones.

Be sure to share this information with family and friends in Mid-Michigan, and remind them to never give sensitive information out over the phone.
