As we head into tax time, remember to be on alert regarding an IRS scam that has been targeting Genesee County residents since this past fall. Now we are getting word about an increase of these attacks in Lapeer County.

People get calls from someone allegedly from the Internal Revenue Service claiming that they owe money, most likely from back taxes. Then the faux IRS agent will tell victims that they can cut you a deal, but only if you make a prompt payment.

If you do owe taxes to the IRS, however, they will send you a written notification.  The IRS will never ask for credit or debit card information over the phoneThis scam, like many others, primarily targets elderly people who still use land-line phones.

Be sure to share this information with family and friends in Mid-Michigan, and remind them to never give sensitive information out over the phone.
