General Motors made good on its promise to bring mass-produced electric cars to the market this year. But don't count on seeing one on the road soon. Sales so far have been very slow. GM sold between 250 and 350 Chevy Volts this month. They are not yet available nationwide. It will be well into 2012 before they are available everywhere in the U.S.

The Volt goes about 40 miles on battery power before needing to be recharged, but it comes with a back-up gas engine that GM says can extend its range to 375 miles as it kicks in to recharge the battery on the fly.
