Just how willing to break the law are Uber and Lyft drivers? It's an unscientific poll, but a hidden camera investigation by a Detroit TV station revealed that five out of six drivers for the ride-sharing companies were willing to transport children without appropriate car seats.

Emily Gottschling, her 2-year-old son and a reporter from WXYZ put three Uber drivers and three Lyft drivers to the test. The team asked the drivers if they'd be willing to transport them without a child safety seat -- a clear violation of Michigan law.

Astoundingly, only one of the drivers refused to transport the child without a car seat.

The drivers who were willing to break the law said things like:

  • “If you’re alright with it, I’m okay with it.”
  • “People have gotten in the car and never asked, so we just go.”
  •  “Well, I’ll be careful.”

After the investigation, the TV station contacted Lyft and Uber for their responses to the drivers' actions. Those responses can be read here.
