Two people have died after a small plane crashed in a residential neighborhood on Detroit's east side Sunday (6/24) night.

The victims, a couple from Texas, flying in from Arkansas and planning to land at nearby City Airport.

A third passenger, a 17-year-old boy was saved when Cordell Owens used an axe to cut a hole in the plane after it crashed.

"The plane crashed and we start running towards it and it was a small plane and the flames were out of control, it started burning and the gentleman in the plane started hollering and screaming, and that was when I went to work," he tells WXYZ.

Officials from the FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash and say that the Cessna 210 was experiencing a problem with its landing gear and was low on fuel before the crash.

The lone survivor is reported to be in critical condition at a local hospital.
