‘The Voice’ Announces Changes for Season 3

If you thought the competition on ‘The Voice‘ was already fierce enough, wait until you hear about the changes being planned for the upcoming season.

During a news conference on Sunday, executive producer Mark Burnett, who was joined by host Carson Daly and the program’s coaches — Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Adam Levine and Cee Lo Greenannounced the third season of the singing competition will have some new twists.

First, the coaches will be able to “steal” vocalists from other coaches during the battle rounds, allowing a second chance for a contestant who’s about to be cut if another coach thinks they’ll be able to tap into the singer’s true potential.

And second, there will be a “knockout round” during which the 10 contestants on each coach’s team will be winnowed down to just five participants — so only 20 singers will take the stage when the live performance rounds begin.

Even though the show is relatively young compared to the granddaddy of vocal talent competitions, ‘American Idol,’ it’s obviously already trying to keep itself from falling into a rut. In addition to the changes mentioned above, ‘The Voice’ is also bringing in superstar talent as “advisors” to help its already famous coaches — Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will work with Aguilera, crooner Michael Buble will team up with Shelton, soul diva Mary J. Blige will share her wisdom with Levine, and Matchbox 20 singer Rob Thomas will lend a hand to Cee-Lo.

The third season of ‘The Voice’ premieres Monday, Sept. 10 at 8PM on NBC.
