When I was in high school, I knew her as "Steve." Yesterday, I found out that Steve is now "Liv." And I love her story.

As parents, we know that there are certain "conversations" we'll have to have with our kids. The talk about the birds and the bees, explaining death, etc. Personally, I don't think about many of those things until the situation arises. But after reading this, I know exactly how to handle this situation when it presents itself with our son. What makes it even better is that I went to high school with the person who taught me how to handle it!

I knew Steve through theater and band. I always just assumed that he was gay, but it was none of my business to ask. The only reason I wanted to know was to save myself the embarrassment of asking him to homecoming, which I never did. He was one of the nicest, most fun people to be around. He was a year younger than me, and we never reconnected after we all went to college. Yesterday, I saw this posted in Cosmopolitan and I thought, "Wow. That looks like Steve Hnilicka!"

But it wasn't. Her name is Liv,  and she's a waitress in Minnesota. And I love that she not only handled this perfectly, but posted it for all of us to share. I also love how the parents handled this.

I'm proud to say that I know such a brave, kind person.

And that, my friends, is definitely what I would call "The Good News."
