"The students have come to understand that it is not our place to judge someone and their circumstances in life, but rather to celebrate and respect the dignity of that person’s life."

Students at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School have created a team of students that acts as pallbearers at the funerals of homeless and unclaimed veterans. Their first meeting was on October 20th, with six juniors and seniors from the school in attendance.

The program is part of the school's service team, the Ignatian Service Corps. The team has worked with local funeral homes in training sessions to prepare the team members for the program. The program will initially work with deceased veterans in the Detroit area, but they hope to expand to help people who need pallbearers in general.

There were almost 50,000 homeless veterans reported in the United States last year.
