She never asked him for money; she simply greeted him every day on the streets of Orlando. This led to them having lunch dates on Tuesdays.

During one of those lunches, Greg Smith learned that Amy Joe never learned how to read. "She cannot read. Amy Joe does not smoke, drink, have a drug addiction, or anything to that nature. She simply just has never had anyone teach her how to read."

Amy Joe also told him that her inability to read has negatively affected her chances at getting a job. “I have been blessed with two amazing parents and a family that has always had resources to provide me with anything I wanted to do. Amy Joe has not.”

So, on Tuesdays, they rent books from the library and read them together. The rest of the week, Amy Joe practices. Greg has been so moved by the whole experience that he's started the Amy Joe Foundation to help others in need.

I'm a big believer that we are all a product of our circumstances, and not everybody's circumstances are ideal. But we can change our lives for the better, if we want to. And clearly, Amy Joe wants to. Greg is a great, selfless example of a kind human being.
