Teen Faked Cancer, Raised $17,000

kol, Flickr

Here’s another stupid person in the news today. A girl in Texas claimed she had leukemia and raised $17,000, but after a further investigation it was learned it was all a scam. Angie Gomez told friends, classmates and teachers that her cancer had returned so many helped her with fundraisers, while schools asked her to talk about her illness.

Gomez at times appeared very sickly and ill-looking so people actually believed her and never questioned anything. If anything, the community did what they could to help her and she almost got away with making $17,000 from her scam. Someone eventually told authorities that they didn’t believe the story so police starting investigating and found out she made the whole thing up.

She hasn’t been arrested yet but faces theft charges as the case continues to be reviewed. How could she actually make something like this up? Did her parents know what was going on?
