The numbers are in, and it’s official: more people decided to stay home instead of seeing their favorite acts on tour in 2011. But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good year for some of the artists who hit the road — including Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, both of whom made the North American top five in Pollstar’s year-end list of the top-grossing tours.

In fact, Taylor had the second-most popular tour of 2011, bringing in an impressive $97.7 million in the States — right behind U2, who topped the American chart as well as the worldwide tally.

Taking overseas numbers into account, U2 racked up $231.9 million on the year, followed by Take That, whose reunion tour grossed $224 million and Bon Jovi, who earned $148.8 million. Rounding out the global top five were Taylor Swift ($104.2 million) and Roger Waters ($103.6 million).

Here at home, Kenny Chesney trailed U2 and Taylor Swift with a $84.6 million gross, with Lady Gaga in fourth ($63.7 million) and Bon Jovi ($57.1 million).

As Pollstar points out, 2012 looks bright for tour promoters (and concertgoers), with acts such as Van Halen, Bruce Springsteen, and Madonna planning to head out on the road, along with high-profile reunion jaunts from Black Sabbath and the Beach Boys.

Which of this year’s top concerts did you see — and which ones are you planning to get tickets for in 2012?
