Meteorologists have gone as far as calling it a “snow drought,” noting that some parts of the state are 10, 20, even more than 30 inches behind what would be a normal winter of snow through early January.

A couple of weeks ago Gov. Rick Snyder officially proclaimed the third Saturday of October to be "Shake Your Mailbox Day" in Michigan! Maybe you missed it, but it is a great idea to do before the snow hits! The day started in 2008 as the innovative idea of one county frustrated by residents' complaints of damaged mailboxes. In most instances where mailboxes are damaged, the snow plow doesn't actually hit the mailbox, the force of the snow thrown from the roadway is enough to knock down a loose, or poorly supported mailbox. If the mailbox moves when shaken, it might not withstand winters wrath.
