Or, rather, the NFL has decided to use high school referees as replacements while it negotiates with the actual referees' union, which has led to the occasional minor controversy. And while Monday's night's disastrous ending to the Packers-Seahawks game is probably the pinnacle (or nadir) of this sad saga, there were already plenty of questionable, puzzling and downright infuriating officiating decisions leading up to it.

Let's have a look, shall we?

By now, even non-football fans have heard about the officiating debacle in last night's showdown between the Green Bay Packers and Seattle Seahawks (just check your Facebook feed). Facing a 12-7 deficit with just seconds left to play, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson rolled out of the pocket and threw a desperation heave into the end zone, resulting in a game-clinching interception for the Packers.

Except it wasn't. Instead, the NFL's much-maligned replacement officials inexplicably ruled the play a touchdown for the Seahawks, ignoring an obvious offensive pass-interference penalty and cementing the phrase "simultaneous catch" into the lexicon of poor sports officiating.

This screw-up will, hopefully, lead to the return of the real refs—but let's not forget that they too have made their share of awful calls over the years. Here's a look at some of the NFL's most controversial officiating decisions:

Although the Detroit Lions won four games this season in which they trailed during the fourth quarter, they couldn't do it a fifth time Sunday as the Green Bay Packers came away with a wild 45-41 win. The Lions were torched by Green Bay's backup quarterback, Matt Flynn, who made his first career start and threw for a club-record six touchdowns.

Even though the Lions haven't won in Green Bay in 20 years, they finished the 2011 regular season with 10 wins and 6 losses -- their best record since 1995.

What's next for the Lions? Read more to find out...

The ruckus was all about Tim Tebow. The Bronco's new quarterback has been under the microscope since becoming a high draft pick last year. Yesterday, the Lions took some of the luster off his debut season with a 45-10 shellacking of Denver in the mile-high city. The Lions made Tebow look like a mere mortal with their strong defensive play that included an interception returned for a touchdown. After giving up a field goal on Denver's first possession, the Lions scored 45 unanswered points to make it a runaway.

After the first half, all I could say was that these looked like the "same ole Lions" that I grew up with. .....but, their second half comeback to defeat the Vikings 26-23, was something we have not seen from these Lions in decades. After fumbles, interceptions, and bad penalties in the first half, the Lions turned it around. What an amazing comeback on the arm of Matthew Stafford, and the catches of Calvin Johnson. It took them overtime to finish off the Vikings, but Jason Hanson's field goal in overtime moved the Lions to 3-0 for the season and left them one of four undefeated teams in the NFL.

It has been a long, long time since the Detroit Lions started a season at 2-0. Some years they didn't even win two games in an entire season. Who could forget 0-16 just a few years ago? And now, after a 48-3 thrashing of the Kansas City Chiefs, the Lions look like Super Bowl contenders. Already this year they have a win on the road (at Tampa Bay last week), and their home opener yesterday had the crowd roaring with delight. Things only get tougher for the Lions as they head to Minnesota to take on the Vikings who are 0-2 and in desperate need of a win.
