The Tiger bats took the night off. Two of the balls that they hit hard were both caught by former Tiger centerfielder Curtis Granderson and both kept the Tigers from enjoying a big inning. Rick Porcello wasn't great, but kept his team in the game. In the 8th inning, the Yankee bats got it going and the Tiger bullpen fell apart. Phil Coke loaded the bases on three straight hits. He was replaced by Al Alburquerque who promptly balked home a run. By the time the inning was over the Yankees had added 6 runs to their lead and the rout was on.

Justin Verlander is going to win the American League Cy Young award. He demonstrated tonight why he might also get the nod as A.L. MVP. Verlander fell behind early as the Yankees scored two runs right away in the first inning. He then got into his groove and put zeros on the scoreboard until his teammates could get him a lead. Verlander struck out 11 Yankee batters in 8 innings of work. The Yankees got to Verlander for two runs in the 7th to tie the game at 4-4. I certainly didn't expect Verlander to go back out there for the 8th, but after Delmon Young hit the first pitch he saw from reliever Rafael Soriano into the right field seats to put the Tigers ahead 5-4, there was J.V. mowing down the Yankees in the 8th.

I really hate the rule that says that playoff games must be finished once they start. The Tigers could have used two more at-bats to potentially get back into tonight's game at Yankee Stadium. Instead, this game began in the bottom of the 2nd inning after last night's game was rained out. Doug Fister picked up where Justin Verlander left off last night, and kept the game close until the 6th inning. Remember that this game started out in the 2nd inning tied at 1-1. A couple of bloops and bleeders and a pair of walks led to a pair of Yankee runs and loaded the bases. Jim Leyland went to the bullpen and brought in Al Alburquerque. Tiger radio announcer Jim Price (I blame you, Jim!) couldn't help but point out the fact that Alburquerque hadn't given up a home run this season.
