Gus Macker Tourney Won’t Be Back In Burton This Year

Not even a half-court shot can save the Gus Macker basketball tournament. On Monday the Burton City Council voted to scrap the three-on-three event, citing it's high operating costs. The September 1st deadline was approaching for a $5,000 fee and the city just could not find the funding.

Michigan Near Top Of Obesity List

It looks like we're still getting fatter. An annual obesity report explored the issue state by state over the past 20 years and found that all but one state had an obesity rate of more than 20%. Michigan's adult obesity rate climbed to 30.5% and remains among the highest in the country.

Michigan Agriculture At Risk Of Invasive Beetle

U.S. Customs and Border Protection found an invasive bug at crossings in Detroit and Port Huron that could threaten Michigan's agricultural industry. Two of the Khapra beetles were found in a shipment of chickpeas from India this spring at the Detroit crossing, and two Khapra larvae and a live beetle were found in a family's luggage last month in Port Huron.

The Michigan Senate will soon vote on a bill to allow cyclists who want to ride without a helmet, the freedom to do so. Under the bill in the senate the cyclists must be at least 21 years old for the "no helmet law" to be applicable. There are also other costs for the helmet-less rider.
