Justin Verlander found himself in a position he hasn't been in so far this spring. Behind in a game he pitched in. On the 3rd pitch of the game, Endy Chavez ran into a Verlander fastball and sent it over the right field fence for a homer and a 1-0 Oriole lead. It's the first run that Verlander has allowed this spring. He promptly struck out the next four batters he faced, then four more in the next two innings.

Detroit Tiger pitcher Justin Verlander won the American League Cy Young award last week by a unanimous vote by the baseball writers. He was a landslide winner for the MVP as well. Verlander received 13 or 28 first-place votes, plus 3 votes for second and third to total 280 points. Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury got 4 first-place votes and 13 second-place votes to finish second with 242 points. Former Tiger Curtis Granderson was 4th and Tiger first baseman Miguel Cabrera finished 5th.

The Rangers quieted the crowd with a run in the top of the first inning, and this looked like it might end badly. The Tigers would have none of that today, as Alex Avila finally got hold of one and hit a solo homer in the 3rd to tie the game at 1-1. Delmon Young connected in the 4th to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Justin Verlander is going to win the American League Cy Young award. He demonstrated tonight why he might also get the nod as A.L. MVP. Verlander fell behind early as the Yankees scored two runs right away in the first inning. He then got into his groove and put zeros on the scoreboard until his teammates could get him a lead. Verlander struck out 11 Yankee batters in 8 innings of work. The Yankees got to Verlander for two runs in the 7th to tie the game at 4-4. I certainly didn't expect Verlander to go back out there for the 8th, but after Delmon Young hit the first pitch he saw from reliever Rafael Soriano into the right field seats to put the Tigers ahead 5-4, there was J.V. mowing down the Yankees in the 8th.

Oakland pitcher Guillermo Moscoso matched zeros with Verlander until the 6th inning when Austin Jackson drilled one over the wall in dead center for the first Tiger hit of the day, and suddenly Verlander and the Tigers had the lead. Verlander would not give the Athletics any hope after that. JV pitched 8 innings and only gave up three hits in earning his 24th win against 5 losses. Jose Valverde worked a 1-2-3 9th to put this one away and earn his 46th save in 46 attempts.

Austin Jackson was named American League "Player of the Week" for his incredible offensive production last week where his batting average was well above .500. Tonight, he made two outs in the first inning. That's actually a good thing. The fact that Jackson had the opportunity to make two outs in the same inning meant that his teammates were doing some serious damage to the Cleveland pitching staff. After Jackson grounded out to start the game, Andy Dirks made the second out in the first. Delmon Young walked for the first time since becoming a Tiger (90+ at-bats). After that, the Tiger batters hit six straight singles and by the time Austin Jackson made the final out of the first inning, the Tigers had a 5-0 lead.

Chicago pitcher John Danks wasn't ready for the Tigers in the first inning of tonight's game. When Miguel Cabrera stole second base off Danks in the first (his catcher didn't have a chance to throw out the lumbering Tiger slugger), you had to know that this might be a good night for the team from "The D". Cabrera ended up scoring on a bloop single to left by Alex Avila, and the Tigers staked Justin Verlander to a 3-0 lead. That was more than enough for the Tiger ace, who struck out six in 7 and one third innings of work. The only blemish was a solo home run to White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers in the 8th inning.

Tiger pitching has been questionable at best on days when Justin Verlander and lately, Doug Fister aren't on the mound. Tiger prospect Jacob Turner got a spot start in this afternoon's game agains the Royals, and the 20-year old demonstrated that he still has much to learn. Turner lasted just 4 and a third innings, giving up 6 runs. His teammates would pick him up and he wouldn't take the loss.
