General Motors announced this afternoon that it will offer select salaried retirees a lump-sum payment offer, and will outsource retirees' pension administration to the Prudential Insurance Company of America.
GM says the moves will reduce its US salaried pension obligation by about $26 billion.
With the price of gas reaching the $4 a gallon threshold, you would expect sales of trucks and SUV's to be slow. General Motors has announced that it will halt production of the Chevy Volt for five weeks beginning later this month because dealers had more inventory than they need. Production of the Volt is scheduled to stop on March 16th and resume in late April, a G.M. spokesman, Chris Lee said.

The spotlight was on Flint, as General Motors is once again claiming its place as the number one car manufacturer in the world.
This week marks the 75th anniversary of the Sit-Down Strike in Flint. In late December of 1936, workers at Fisher Body #1 became part of what has been called the most significant strike in American labor history. These workers were fighting for recognition of their union, the United Auto Workers, and to keep their jobs from going to non-union workers. The strike lasted 44 days and the workers won the right to be represented by the UAW.
General Motors fumbled away the title as the world's largest car-maker in 2008 to Toyota, but is poised to reclaim it this year. It has been a dramatic turnaround for the automaker. A combination of events have helped propel GM back to number one. Toyota's recalls, Japan's earthquake, and a historic shift in car buying have pulled GM out of bankruptcy. This year GM has 6.79 million sales, leading Toyota by over a million.

Over the weekend, we heard news of GM planning to make an official announcement today regarding more money going into a plant. WNEM reports they have made it official that they will invest $328 million to get ready for the Flint plant to build the next generation of Chevrolet and GMC full size trucks.
It's not often you can associate good news with the auto industry and Flint, but GM officials are planning "a positive news announcement" for the Vehicle City on Monday morning.
General Motors says that pricing for its new sub-compact car, the Chevrolet Sonic, will start at just under $15,000 when it arrives on the dealers lots this fall. Standard equipment on the new vehicle includes 10 airbags, power door locks, remote keyless entry and 15 inch alloy wheels.
