Chicago pitcher John Danks wasn't ready for the Tigers in the first inning of tonight's game. When Miguel Cabrera stole second base off Danks in the first (his catcher didn't have a chance to throw out the lumbering Tiger slugger), you had to know that this might be a good night for the team from "The D". Cabrera ended up scoring on a bloop single to left by Alex Avila, and the Tigers staked Justin Verlander to a 3-0 lead. That was more than enough for the Tiger ace, who struck out six in 7 and one third innings of work. The only blemish was a solo home run to White Sox catcher Tyler Flowers in the 8th inning.

Tiger pitching has been questionable at best on days when Justin Verlander and lately, Doug Fister aren't on the mound. Tiger prospect Jacob Turner got a spot start in this afternoon's game agains the Royals, and the 20-year old demonstrated that he still has much to learn. Turner lasted just 4 and a third innings, giving up 6 runs. His teammates would pick him up and he wouldn't take the loss.

Rick Porcello put two pitches in the wheelhouse of Kansas City rookie first baseman Eric Hosmer, and Hosmer put both of them deep into the right field seats. Note to Porcello: Don't pitch to that guy anymore. Porcello was hit hard by many of the other Royals hitters today, but left the game trailing only 4-2 after 7 innings.

Ramon Santiago wasn't supposed to be the hero of tonight's game. Tiger starting pitcher Doug Fister mowed down the first 18 Kansas City hitters without anybody reaching base. Fister would get into some trouble in the 7th, but the Royals would only score one run. Unfortunately, the Tigers were still being shut out at that point and found themselves trailing 1-0. The Tigers finally tied the game in the 8th on a clutch 2-out hit by Magglio Ordonez.

This one started out badly for Tiger pitcher Max Scherzer and then went downhill. Alex Gordon of the Royals led off the game with a homer and Kansas City would put runs on the board in 5 of the first 6 innings. Scherzer didn't make it out of the 4th inning and had already given up 7 runs to the Royals.

After winning the first two games of their 3-game series with the Cleveland Indians, the Tigers might have thought this was going to be easy. Detroit had a 7-0 lead after just 3 innings in this afternoon's game, and Tiger pitcher Rick Porcello was getting the Indian hitters to ground out with regularity. When Cleveland scored five runs in the 4th and chased Porcello, this one had all the markings of a disaster in the making.

Max Scherzer has been hot and cold this season. His electric arm shows the promise of possibly becoming a 20-game winner at some point in his young career. Tiger fans are hoping Scherzer can help the team win some important games in Detroit's drive for the American League Central title, especially against their rivals from Cleveland.

Missed opportunities. They have nagged the Tigers all season long and have kept Detroit from enjoying a comfortable lead in the American League Central division. This game went back and forth, and with the Twins up 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th the Tigers loaded the bases with nobody out. A sacrafice fly off the bat of Wilson Betemit brought home the tying run (at the time), but the Tigers could not get the clutch hit they so desperately needed. With the game tied at 4, manager Jim Leyland went to closer Jose Valverde to pitch the 9th. He should know better.

The Minnesota Twins put some runners on base in the early innings, but failed to score against Detroit's Justin Verlander. By the time the Twinkies got on the scoreboard in the 8th inning, the Tigers had already crossed home plate 7 times. That was more than enough for Verlander to get win number 18 in a 7-1 Detroit victory.

Jim Thome has made a career of hitting home runs. He came into tonight's game against the Tigers with 598. Before the night was over, he had 5 RBI and career homer #600. Thome becomes only the 8th player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 600 homer milestone. The game started out with a homer by the newest Tiger, Delmon Young, who reached the seats in his first Tiger at-bat in the first inning to put Detroit up 1-0.

The Tigers have a scheduled day off on Thursday. For the first 8 innings today, it looked like they were taking today's game off. They couldn't hit when it counted, couldn't play defense (Raburn should donate his glove to someone who might learn how to use it), and didn't pitch very well. The Orioles, who own the worst record in baseball pounded Tiger starter Doug Fister for 8 runs. Finally, in the 9th inning, the Tigers showed some signs of life.

The last 8 wins for the Tigers have been of the 1-run variety. This one didn't start out very well for Max Scherzer and his Detroit teammates. Baltimore scored 5 runs in the second inning on a pair of home runs. Scherzer settled down after that and dominated the Orioles, racking up 10 strikeouts in 7 innings. The Tiger offense would respond with a single run in the 4th and then came up with a big two-out rally in the sixth.
