Two of baseball's final four teams are set after one division series in each league reached its conclusion on Thursday. The two remaining division series have their fifth and deciding games scheduled for Friday
Don Kelly hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th inning to give the Tigers a 5-4 walk-off win in today's game. The win gives the Tigers a 2-0 advantage over Oakland in their best-of-five American League Divisional Series.
For the first time since 1967, a Major League Baseball player has won the Triple Crown of batting, most home runs, highest batting average and most runs batted in. That player would be Miguel Cabrera of the Tigers.
The math is pretty simple for the Detroit Tigers. A win by the Tigers in any of their last three games of the season at Kansas City will result in the Tigers winning the American League Central title. A loss by the Chicago White Sox will accomplish the same result, as the second place Sox visit Cleveland to wrap up their season.
A little over a week ago, many Tiger fans were ready to give up on their baseball team. "Stick a fork in them" was what I was hearing from fickle fans after the team was embarrassed by Cleveland and then held at bay the the then first-place White Sox.
After actor jeff Garlin, a Chicago native, sang 'Take Me Out To The Ballgame' during the seventh-inning stretch at Thursday's Detroit Tigers-Chicago Cubs game, he told Tigers fans what he thought of us.
Tiger 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera took a hard shot to the face on a batted ball in the first inning of today's Grapefruit League game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The experiment to move Cabrera back to his old position (3rd) after acquiring free agent slugger Prince Fielder to play first base hit a snag today. In his first three weeks back at third, Cabrera had done quite well. Today's incident was a reminder that the move to third for the reigning American League batting champion comes with considerable risk.
The Detroit Tigers continue to roll through Spring Training, clobbering the New York Mets today 9-0. Rick Porcello started the game and threw 4 shutout innings, scattering 4 hits and striking out 3. The rest of the Tiger pitching staff took it from there to complete the shutout. The Tigers are 10-1 (with 3 ties) in Grapefruit League action. Prince Fielder and Delmon Young had key hits to drive in runs and chase Mets starter Johan Santana from the game in the 3rd inning.
The Detroit Tigers will probably win a lot of games like this one today, outhitting their opponents on a day when our pitching staff didn't have their "A" game. Max Scherzer started the game for the Tigers, and wasn't hitting his spots in most attempts. The Mets got to Scherzer for 3 runs on four hits and two walks in 2 and 2/3rds innings of work. Scherzer did manage to strike out 4. The Tiger bats saved the day, with the newest "Big Fella" going long to drive home two in the 4th inning.
