The Tigers tied the game in the bottom of the 8th off San Francisco closer Bryan Wilson a.k.a. "The Beard" 1-1 when Magglio Ordonez stroked a single to right.  Manager Jim Leyland went to his closer, Jose Valverde to pitch the 9th.  Valverde is 19 for 19 in save situations, but hasn't fared well in non-save situations.  He didn't fare well at all in this one.

Justin Verlander didn't even have his "A" game today.  But he is proving every time he takes the mound that he is one of the most formidable pitchers in the game.  He kept the Mets from putting slowpitch softball-like numbers on the scoreboard today and the Tigers won 5-2.

Rick Porcello didn't have it tonight.  He gave up 7 runs to the New York Mets and didn't make it out of the 4th inning.  Daniel Schlereth relieved Porcello and appeared to throw gas on the fire.  By the time Schlereth hit the showers, the Tigers were down 13-0.

Max Scherzer pitched well enough to earn his 10th win of the season.  He didn't get it, but the Tigers rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 8th to pull out a 4-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays in a make-up game from a rainout from back in May.  Tiger Manager Jim Leyland had to watch his team win this one on tv, as he was thrown out for arguing with the umpires in the 7th.

Clayton Kershaw was pitching for the Great Lakes Loons a couple of years ago.  Last night in Los Angeles, Kershaw had Tiger hitters feeling a bit loony.  Kershaw threw a 2-hit shutout, striking out 11 Tiger batters including all 3 in the 9th.  He also drove in two runs in the 8th inning for some icing on his cake.
