Detroit Tigers Come Back To Win #95, Start Playoffs At New York Friday

The Tigers needed to win tonight's game to have a chance at home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs. They also needed the Angels to beat the Rangers. They made good on the first part of the deal, even after falling behind 3-0 to the Indians. Rick Porcello pitched six decent innings tonight, giving up three runs on just five hits. The Tigers got one in the 4th, 2 more in the 6th to tie it at 3-3.

Detroit Tigers Beat Cleveland For Win #94

The Tigers have owned the Cleveland Indians in the second half of this season. That wouldn't change in tonight's game despite a 30 minute rain delay. Max Scherzer became the first 15-game winner for the Tigers not named Verlander since Kenny Rogers pitched for Detroit. Scherzer didn't have his best game, but his offense gave him enough backup to get the victory.

Detroit Tigers Beat Cleveland Like A Drum

Doug Fister is now 11-13 for the season. That doesn't sound all that impressive unless you consider that he was 3-12 with Seattle before being traded to the Tigers. Fister got no help offensively when he pitched for the Mariners. That wasn't a problem tonight. While Fister was putting up zeros, the Tigers were boosting their batting averages. Detroit pounded out 18 hits and blew the game wide open with an 8-run 8th inning to clobber Cleveland 14-0.

Detroit Tigers Sweep Indians, Verlander Wins #22

Justin Verlander only gave up three hits today in six innings of work. Two of them were two-run homers to Shelley Duncan, and Verlander finished the sixth trailing 4-2. You don't win 20+ games in the big leagues without a little help, and that help showed up in the top of the seventh in the form of a five run Tiger rally. Victor Martinez hit a grand slam on the first pitch he saw from reliever Tony Sipp to give the Tigers the lead for good.

Detroit Tigers Topple Tribe, Magic Number Is 14

Austin Jackson was named American League "Player of the Week" for his incredible offensive production last week where his batting average was well above .500. Tonight, he made two outs in the first inning. That's actually a good thing. The fact that Jackson had the opportunity to make two outs in the same inning meant that his teammates were doing some serious damage to the Cleveland pitching staff. After Jackson grounded out to start the game, Andy Dirks made the second out in the first. Delmon Young walked for the first time since becoming a Tiger (90+ at-bats). After that, the Tiger batters hit six straight singles and by the time Austin Jackson made the final out of the first inning, the Tigers had a 5-0 lead.

Detroit Tigers Crush White Sox 18-2

This was a day when everybody in the lineup padded their stats. Andy Dirks came in as a defensive replacement after the game was already out of hand and had 4 RBI on two hits. Detroit Tigers Sweep Cleveland, Lead is 4.5 Games

After winning the first two games of their 3-game series with the Cleveland Indians, the Tigers might have thought this was going to be easy. Detroit had a 7-0 lead after just 3 innings in this afternoon's game, and Tiger pitcher Rick Porcello was getting the Indian hitters to ground out with regularity. When Cleveland scored five runs in the 4th and chased Porcello, this one had all the markings of a disaster in the making.

Detroit Tigers Stay Up All Night, Lose 3-2

This one looked to be a slugfest at first. Cleveland scored two in the first off Tiger starter Doug Fister. Detroit responded with two of their own in the second off Cleveland's starting pitcher. Then the rains came. Two hours later the game resumed and both starting pitchers were done for the night. The score would remain 2-2 until the bottom of the 14th.
