You may remember hearing about Casey Foley. The mentally ill Flint man was found dead near his parents' home in 2011, just one day after his release from a psychiatric hospital.

Most of Foley's adult life was tumultuous. The people he felt closest to were the homeless people living on the streets of Flint. He robbed a bank in order to give them money. But after several years in a state hospital, and against the advice of staff that had cared for him, Casey was released. Less than a day later, he left his parents' house. "I'll see you in Hell," was the last thing he said to his mom.

Three years after his death, his mother tells Detroit's WXYZ that Michigan's mental health code needs to be overhauled.

"He's a young man with schizophrenia who’s carrying around a Ziploc bag full of pills, in the middle of winter," Veronica Stewart tells the TV station. "That’s a crisis. Someone should be able to do something about that."

You could say Casey fell through the cracks.

In the video below, the Detroit TV station takes a closer look at Casey's life, and the system that failed him.
