A high school student has been punished and is being threatened with more disciplinary action after omitting the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance. Seventeen-year-old Derek Giardina and other members of his class are supposed to read the Pledge and morning announcements 12 times per year.

I’m not necessarily very patriotic, and I’m not religious.

He said, “Personally I wouldn’t say the pledge at all, because I’m not necessarily very patriotic, and I’m not religious." If he was forced to read the Pledge, I would understand and side with the student. But that's not the case. There were two options for the assignment, and he chose the Pledge.
