Burch Farms may be located in North Carolina, but the melons that they have been forced to recall by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are being sold here in Michigan. Hit read more to find out why.

The North Carolina company has recalled tens of thousands of cantaloupes and honeydew melons after the FDA said it found the bacteria Listria monocytogenes on a honeydew grown and distributed by Burch Farms.

One of the deadliest outbreaks of food borne illness outbreaks occurred last year, when contaminated cantaloupes gave 147 people food poisoning. 30 of those cases ended in loss of life and one woman suffered a miscarriage. It can take a few days to no more than two months to feel the symptoms of Listeriosis from a contaminated melon. Those symptoms include muscle aches, fever, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal problems.

It should be noted that no cases of food poisoning have been linked to this recall. Michigan shoppers should ask their store whether they got their melons from Burch Farms.
