Psy Retires ‘Gangnam Style’ With M.C. Hammer on ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’

Just in case you were sick of the inescapable Psy hit ‘Gangnam Style,’ don’t worry — he is, too. As a matter of fact, the South Korean sensation closed the book on the ‘Gangnam’ phenomenon for 2013 at last night’s ‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ performance!

Psy performed the massive hit with M.C. Hammer for Ryan Seacrest and the Times Square crowd, rocking a white suit and fur coat with matching cat eye glasses. Not only was Psy celebrating the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013, but he was also rocking out for his 35th birthday (Dec. 31), with the audience wishing him a good one at the end of his energetic show.

“Being in Times Square on New Year’s Eve is already special — it’s the biggest stage in the universe — plus it’s my birthday, so, with all that, it may be the ending of ‘Gangnam Style,'” Psy revealed to MTV News. “I mean, what better way to do it? It’s my biggest and most meaningful birthday.”

Why doesn’t he want to perform the massive hit anymore? Because he doesn’t want to be identified by one song, however huge it may be. Pretty savvy move, right?

“The song became too popular, and so you start to have some concern about its life period,” he explained. “I’m really working hard on a new single right now, and I’m not saying [‘Gangnam’] is ending on ‘Dick Clark’ — I still have a lot of invitations to perform it … I’ll be in Paris, and in February I got invited to perform in China, and I’ve still got to do promo. So let me say that in America I need a new single because ‘Gangnam Style’ got too popular, so I’ve got to write a new single.”
