Why wouldn't the artist keep this secret to himself?!

The portrait, which resides in the National Portrait Gallery (but not on display), was released in 2006. The original controversy was that there was no wedding ring on Clinton's finger. Now, almost ten years later, the artist says that the shadow on the mantle represents Monica Lewinsky!

Artist Nelson Shanks says that the shadow was cast by a mannequin in a blue dress, to represent the "shadow" that was cast over Clinton's presidency. However, he maintains that the mannequin was not in the room when he painted the President; he added it afterwards.

I don't get it! Artists do stuff like this all the time - they incorporate little things into their work that they don't tell anybody about. Look at all of the animated Disney films with subliminal messages! Why would he tell anybody that he did it?
