Celebrate President’s Day with a Look at Presidents Tossing Ceremonial First Pitches

Did you know that President Taft was the first president to toss the ceremonial first pitch before a Major League Baseball game? He did in in 1910 on Opening Day at Griffith Stadium before a Washington Senators game. Since Taft, every president has followed suit taking the mound at some point during his presidency.

The calendar may say that it is winter for a few more weeks, but Spring Training begins Sunday for the Detroit Tigers and the rest of Major League Baseball as pitchers and catchers report for workouts. Detroit Tiger Legends Jack Morris & Alan Trammell Gain H.O.F. Votes

The Baseball Writers Association of America (BWAA) voted Cincinnati Reds infielder Barry Larkin into the Baseball Hall Of Fame this year. There were 27 candidates on this year's ballot. Larkin was the only one that got the 75% of votes needed for enshrinement in Cooperstown, NY. Two Tiger greats gained momentum from the writers, Jack Morris got 66.7% of the votes and Alan Trammell got 36.8%.

Detroit Tigers Add Relief Help With Dotel

The Detroit Tigers have been pretty quiet at baseball's Winter Meetings. The team is bringing back most of the major contributors from 2011's squad, which lost to Texas in the American League Championship Series. The big headlines were made by Anaheim when they signed slugger Albert Pujols for $254 million and by the Miami Marlins signing Jose Reyes for mucho dinero (120 million). The Tigers quietly added veteran relief pitcher Octavio Dotel to help shore up the middle innings.

St. Louis Ends Improbable Run as World Series Champions

The St. Louis Cardinals were not expected to make the playoffs. 10 and 1/2 games out of contention for the Wild Card at the end of August, they scrapped and clawed their way into the postseason on the very last day of the regular season. Then they had to play the heavily favored Phillies in the Divisional Series and they found a way to knock them off. They upset the Brewers in the NLCS, and were the underdogs going into the World Series against the slugging Texas Rangers. Down 3 games to 2, the Cardinals won an epic Game Six in extra innings after coming from 2 runs behind twice. Game 7, the Rangers scored twice in the opening innning.

Comeback Cardinals Force World Series Game Seven

The Texas Rangers were one strike away from winning their first World Championship. Twice. They had a 7-5 lead with two outs in the bottom of the ninth and two strikes on David Freese. Freese tripled off the right field wall to tie the game at 7-7 and send Game Six of the 2011 World Series into extra innings. The Rangers' Josh Hamilton quieted the crowd at Busch Stadium with a two-run homer in the top of the tenth to put Texas ahead by two runs at 9-7. The Cardinals would not give up.
