May 20, 2011 Brad Penny kept his team in the game for a few innings, but his control wasn't good tonight and he walked six batters, many of whom scored. It didn't really matter, as the Tigers could only cross the plate one time in a 10-1 thrashing by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
May 19, 2011 Justin Verlander pitched well enough to win. As usual, his team didn't give him much in the way of help. Verlander pitched eight innings, striking out nine batters and giving up three runs. The Tigers tied the game up in the eighth inning on back-to-back homers from Brennan Boesch and Miguel Cabrera, but couldn't deliver in the clutch when they had a great opportunity.
The Super Bowl hasn't always been so super. In fact, throughout the '80s and into the first half of the '90s many of the games were blowouts the likes of which are rarely seen during the regular season.
We've had better luck with Super Bowls lately, and this year's match-up between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers is about as even as can be.
So maybe Sunday's game will end up being a classic. But for now we can count down the five best Super Bowls ever played.
