Tom Schmidt is in a wheelchair himself, yet he's devoting his life to helping others.

The Mt. Morris resident spent a good part of his life building custom cars before an accident on I-96 in 1992 left him without one of his legs, and damaged the other.

Since then, Tom has been in a wheelchair. The Lapeer group called Hometown Heroes donated an electric wheelchair to him, which he says has given him his freedom back. Now, he wants to do the same for others.

He fixes up broken electric wheelchairs at his home and gives them out to people across Michigan. In the past16 months, he's given away over 40 power chairs. He calls his crusade Wheels for Life.

However, with a non-profit venture like this comes costs - Tom is running low on power chairs, batteries, supplies, and of course, money. A GoFundMe has been set up for him to continue his mission - you can donate HERE.

As the daughter of a woman who has had MS for the past 28 years and relies on an electric wheelchair, I know the cost and I think this is one of the most beautiful, self-less things that anybody could do. Thank you, Tom.
