"You are smart, and you are pretty. It would take nothing from you to also be kind."

Michelle Icard, a mom who works from home, is a frequent customer at her local Starbucks. Recently, she overheard a gaggle of young girls having a conversation that, in her words, left her "crawling out of my skin." Michelle, who writes books about parenting, decided to speak up...in a different way. She sent coffee over to their table, along with this note. She then posted it on Facebook, where the note went viral.

So many things that I love about this story! 1) She didn't publicly shame these girls online. She posted the note, not a picture or video of them. 2) She acknowledged the obvious: you're pretty, you've already got an advantage. Being nice costs nothing, so try it. 3) It's just as important to be as pretty on the inside as you are on the outside.

I know that we've all been in her position before, and we wonder whether or not we should speak up. There's a way to do it, while being tactful. And Michelle nailed it.
