A huge congratulations to Jessyca Matthews!

Ms. Matthews, as she’s known to her students, will now be known throughout the state of Michigan as the High School English Teacher of the Year by the Michigan Council of Teachers of English.

She’s a Flint-native, a 1995 graduate of Carman-Ainsworth...and the first African American to receive the award.

She’s taught for the district for 18 years, is a published author, and is also a member of the Red Cedar Writing Project at Michigan State University.

She also won an award this year as the school’s girls soccer coach. She’ll be recognized on Oct. 19 at the fall conference of the Michigan Council of Teachers of English in Lansing.
