An 18-year-old Michigan woman is dead after a car plowed through Times Square Thursday. Alyssa Elsman from Portage was visiting New York with her family. Her 13-year-old sister was one of 22 people also injured in the incident.

Portage is located about seven miles south of Kalamazoo.

Elsman is a 2016 graduate of Portage Central High School. Principal Eric Alburtus tells ABC:

"Alyssa was the type of person who seemed very shy and reserved when you first met her, but once you started talking to her you realized she was smart, funny and engaging. She will be deeply missed by the staff and students here."

The driver of the car has been identified as 26-year-old Richard Rojas from the Bronx. He fled on foot after the crash, but was detained by police and has been taken into custody.
