She had to carry her birth certificate and marriage license to prove that she was, in fact, living.

Carol Tilley of Brownstown Township couldn't figure out why she wasn't able to require her Medicare benefits, and why she wasn't allowed to vote in the August primary. Then she realized...the government thought she was dead.

Tilley's husband passed away from cancer back in January, and she found out that the Social Security Administration had listed HER as the deceased. Until the issue could be resolved, she had to carry around her birth certificate, marriage license and her husband's death certificate to prove that the government had made a mistake.

A spokesperson for the SSA says that mistakes sometimes happen, given that they process 2.5 million deaths per year. They are in the process of fixing the mistake with Mrs. Tilley.
