Online retailers like Amazon will soon be required to collect 6% sales tax from Michiganders who make internet purchases.

Governor Snyder signed a bill on Thursday (1/15) that requires companies that have warehouses or any physical presence in our state to remit the tax beginning on October 1st. The bill, however, does not affect certain retailers, like Overstock.com for instance, that do not have Michigan ties. The Detroit Free Press reports that such a move would require federal action.

Did you know? Most Michigan residents are unaware that they are required to report and pay sales tax on internet purchases when they file their income tax return. The state treasury estimates that last year $289.4 million in sales tax from internet sales went uncollected.
