Shopping locally is good for the economy and doing so this weekend could win you a $100 gift card courtesy of the Michigan Retailer's Association.

All you have to do is take a photo of your purchase or a selfie while you're out shopping this weekend during 'Buy Nearby' weekend. Share it on social media with the hashtag #buynearbymi and you're qualified for one of five $100 gift cards that are being given away.

Here are the details from the Michigan Retailer's Association website:

  • Share at least one photo on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #buynearbymi. Be sure your post is “public” so we can see it!
  • The photo must be put on social media sometime between 12:01 a.m. Oct. 5 through 11:59 p.m. Oct. 7.
  • You must be 18 or older to win.
  • By using the hashtag, you agree to allow us to use the photo on our social media.

What does shopping locally do for Michigan's economy? In 2017, Michiganders spent $18.5 billion with out-of-state retailers. A recent economic study by Public Sector Consultants showed that If we switched just one out of every 10 purchases to a Michigan retailer the state's economy would grow by $1.2 billion dollars and create approximately 10,000 jobs.
