Sanitation workers want you to know:  Don't throw anything with chemicals, acid, or materials that could be harmful in the trash.

A garbage man in Sterling Heights was injured on the job Wednesday (3/20) when a bag he threw in the back of the truck was compacted, causing acid and bug killer to spray in his face.

The man was taken to urgent care where he was treated for chemical burns.

Although the warning was issued to residents of Sterling Heights, it should be pointed out that everyone who uses garbage pickup services should take precautions.

A spokesman for Green For Life tells WDIV that there a number of household items that should not be disposed of in the garbage.

  • That list includes:
  • Acids
  • Batteries & battery acid
  • Flammable or explosive items
  • Paint & paint thinner
  • Medical sharps
  • Ammunition
  • Antifreeze
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Any hazardous chemicals or chemicals that could cause hazardous interactions when mixed with other chemicals.
