An Atlanta, Georgia man has been fired after posting a controversial picture to Facebook.

Gerod Roth, who is white, posed with a coworker's 3-year-old son. His friends began posting racist and insulting comments to the picture, calling the African American boy 'Kunta Kinte' and equating Roth to a slave owner.

Roth insists that he asked one of his friends to stop making racist comments, but tells Fox 5 that his plea was cropped out of the screenshot that went viral.

On a personal note, I have to say that this story bothers me immensely. My wife and I have grandchildren whose heritage is African American. I would hate to think that any photo we post with them could in any way be considered racist.

It's 2015. I'd like to think we've moved beyond things like this happening, but apparently racism still has a way of rearing its ugly head. Sad. I'd also like to believe that none of my Facebook friends are dumb enough to post racially-charged comments. I'm a glass-is-half-full guy.
