When Martin Pistorious was 12 years old, he started to lose his ability to move. Doctors suspected meningitis, but it was too late. His body was paralyzed and slipped into a coma.

Doctors told his parents to bring him home and make him comfortable. They drove him to and from daycare everyday, and turned him over every few hours to avoid bedsores.

About two years into his coma, he began to wake up...sort of. He was aware of everything going on around him, but he was unable to communicate. So his family still thought he was in a vegetative state. Martin says he even heard his mother say, "I hope you die." He says that he doesn't hold it against her; she just wanted him to be done suffering. Nevertheless, he heard it.

One day, a worker at the daycare center noticed that he was trying to move. Eventually, he began speaking with the use of a computer. By the age of 26, he went to college. He eventually wrote a book, got a job and got married.
