The Lapeer County Sheriff Department will give their deputies another tool to combat heroin overdoses in the area.

Deputies will be carrying Narcan, a nasal spray that blocks the effects of heroin and other opiates on the brain and can, in some cases, bring people back from the brink of a deadly overdose. Macomb County deputies have been carrying Narcan for about 11 months and have seen great success with saving lives. Lapeer County deputies will be trained on the drug before they carry it during patrols starting May 1st.

It's sad that we have to combat heroin in our community, but I am glad that the Lapeer County Sheriff Department is taking an active role to help save lives. I hope this focus on saving lives instead of just locking drug users up, will help ensure that there are less drug users and less overdoses.
